Why South Florida Water Can Quietly Wreck Your Coffee Machine

If you've gone through more than one coffee maker or espresso machine in the past few years and assumed you just bought a cheap one, there's a good chance the real problem was never the machine. It's what's coming out of your faucet. South Florida, Fort Myers included, sits on top of some of the most mineral- and salt-affected groundwater in the country, and it causes two distinct kinds of damage that get lumped together as “hard water” when they're actually not the same problem at all.

One of those problems you can fix with a descaling routine. The other can permanently pit and corrode the inside of your machine, and no amount of descaling will undo it. Knowing which one you're dealing with matters, especially if you're about to spend real money on equipment.

Two Different Water Problems, Often Confused as One

Hardness (calcium and magnesium). This is the mineral buildup most people already know about: the white, chalky scale that coats a kettle or shows up around a showerhead. In a coffee maker or espresso machine, it builds up inside boilers and lines, restricting flow and reducing heating efficiency. It's annoying, but it's manageable: routine descaling removes it.

Chloride and sodium (salt). This is a different mineral profile entirely, and it's the one that does the damage a descaling solution can't reverse. Chloride is corrosive to stainless steel, which is what most espresso machine boilers and many coffee maker components are made from. Once chloride gets to a certain concentration, it causes pitting corrosion, small, localized pits that eat into the metal itself. Unlike scale, this isn't buildup you can dissolve away. It's structural damage, and it tends to show up as leaks, failed seals, or a miriad of other issues

Why This Hits Southwest Florida Harder Than Most of the Country

Both of these issues trace back to the same source: the Floridan and Biscayne aquifers, which supply most of the region's water and run through limestone that's naturally high in dissolved calcium and magnesium. That alone accounts for the hardness side of the equation, which is well documented across South Florida. Cities like Miami and West Palm Beach report hardness in the 188–320 ppm range, well above the level water treatment professionals consider a problem.

The chloride side is a more recent and more coastal issue. Rising sea levels, heavy groundwater pumping, and drought have been pushing saltwater further into these same aquifers for years. This is a well-documented trend regulators call saltwater intrusion. Chloride concentrations in parts of the aquifer have more than doubled over the past couple of decades, and some coastal wells in South Florida now test well above the EPA's aesthetic guideline of 250 mg/L for chloride. Coastal and near-coastal communities across Southwest Florida, including areas around Fort Myers and Lee County, draw from this same aquifer system, which is exactly why it's worth checking your own water rather than assuming.

This is also where things get genuinely confusing: municipal treatment can change the numbers substantially. Fort Myers' own utility reports treated water hardness around 30 ppm (soft, by most standards), while other regional estimates for the same area run dramatically higher. The discrepancy usually comes down to whether you're looking at treated municipal supply, a private well, or an estimate that doesn't reflect your specific system. The only way to know what's actually reaching your machine is to check your source directly.

Why the Difference Actually Matters for Your Equipment

If your only concern is scale, a countertop coffee maker or entry-level machine can shrug it off with a quarterly descaling and keep running for years. Chloride corrosion is a different category of problem. Equipment manufacturers who build espresso machines (especially with stainless steel boilers) specifically warn that chloride above roughly 30 ppm meaningfully increases the risk of pitting corrosion, and some commercial machine makers recommend water with effectively zero chloride. That's a far stricter threshold than the EPA's 250 ppm aesthetic guideline for drinking water, which was never designed with metal boilers in mind. Water that's perfectly fine to drink can still be actively corroding the inside of your espresso machine.

How to Actually Test and Fix It

The cheap test strips sold for aquariums and pools measure hardness (calcium and magnesium) and nothing else. Passing that test tells you nothing about chloride, which means it's entirely possible to have “soft” water by that strip and still be corroding a machine's internals.

A few concrete steps:

  1. Pull your utility's Consumer Confidence Report and look specifically for chloride and sodium numbers, not just a general hardness rating. These reports are public and usually available on your provider's website.
  2. If you're on a private well (common in parts of Lee County and much of coastal Southwest Florida), get it tested directly for chloride. Wells are far more exposed to saltwater intrusion than treated municipal supply, and a general hardness test won't catch it.
  3. Don't assume a standard water softener solves this. Conventional ion-exchange softeners swap calcium and magnesium for sodium; they address hardness, but they do not remove chloride. If corrosion is your actual risk, a softener alone won't stop it.
  4. Reverse osmosis (RO) is the fix that addresses both problems. RO filtration removes hardness minerals and chloride/sodium together, which is why it's the standard recommendation for espresso machines running on coastal Florida water.
  5. A basic carbon pitcher filter helps with chlorine taste, not this. It's worth having for flavor, but it won't meaningfully reduce hardness or chloride.

What This Means for Your Next Machine (or Your Current One)

If you're using municipal water with a documented low chloride number, as well as not too hard, you're likely good for routine preventative maintenance, and that's it. If you're on a well, live near the coast, or simply haven't checked, it's worth testing before you invest in a nicer machine. An RO system is a lot cheaper than rebuilding a machine that's been quietly collecting corrosion for years.
